The new KINO DER KUNST: film series, artist talks, film premieres

The fifth edition of KINO DER KUNST, originally planned for April 2024, has to be cancelled. Our biennial for short and long feature films by visual artists with its highly endowed International Competition, which has brought in the past so many significant artistic positions from all over the world to, cannot take place anymore. The unique perspective of KINO DER KUNST has always been to conceive cinema through art and art through cinema. Our fundamental question was what contemporary media art can contribute to cinema.

The answer is short and has not changed since the foundation of KINO DER KUNST more than ten years ago: a lot. Even if the fifth edition is cancelled, it must be stated that KINO DER KUNST was internationally a great success. The impressive list of jury members is from Cindy Sherman, Amira Casar and Nina Hoss to Luca Guadagnino, Ed Lachman, Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Yang Fudong or Isaac Julien. Renowned guests from Shirin Neshat to Gilbert & George plus an international board of trustees headed by collector and media art pioneer Ingvild Goetz have created with KINO DER KUNST an event that is unique worldwide, combining cinema and exhibition platforms.

It should be said, however, that in the last years all financing of cultural projects has become increasingly precarious in the midst of the actual economic and political crisis. Hence our bitter conclusion that the International Competition of KINO DER KUNST can no longer survive.

However, individual program series, in the form of collaborations with institutional partners will continue to take place. Curated series in cinemas, organised independently or accompanying exhibitions in major museums, as well as artist talks, lectures and film premieres will continue to enrich Munich’s cultural offerings under the label of KINO DER KUNST.
