It was already used as an artistic stylistic device in analogue cinematography. Then, through the use of video-based and digital technologies at the latest, creative possibilities became almost infinite. The film series ‘Switch to the Glitch!’ presents four movies from four different decades offering approaches in which the boundaries between reality and fiction are explored, disturbed and sometimes overcome in a variety of ways.

TUES 16.1.2024, 20.00
Introduction: Heinz Peter Schwerfel, KINO DER KUNST
Tickets

Videodrome by David Cronenberg (Can, 1983, 87′, English original version )
Cast: James Woods, Sonja Smits, Deborah Harry, and others

This cult film, long banned in German cinemas, established Cronenberg’s reputation as a master of a psychologically abysmal fantasy riddled with political undertones that does not shy away from ‘body horror’ and ‘snuff movies’. The film tells the story of Max Renn (James Woods), operator of a private cable station, who discovers an encrypted pirate radio station called “Videodrome”, which broadcasts violent pornographic programmes with allegedly real murders on alternating frequencies. Max’s girlfriend, radio presenter Niki Brand (Deborah Harry from “Blondie”), likes the programmes so much that she wants to apply to be an actress, while Max tries to broadcast them on his own station. He learns from a scientist, who only corresponds with him via video cassettes, that viewers addicted to “Videodrome” develop a brain tumour after a while, which causes hallucinations. For Max, a journey into hell begins…

TUES 23.1.2024, 20.00
Introduction: Franziska Kunze, Pinakothek der Moderne
Tickets

The Blair Witch Project by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez (USA, 1999,’81′, English original version )
Cast: Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, Michael C. Williams, and others

Another cult film about the manipulative power of electronic images, in this case supposedly authentic ‘found footage’: in 1994, three film students intend to make a documentary about a local witch legend in the US-American state of Maryland. Although various horror stories claim that this forest is supposedly haunted, they are not deterred from camping there for a few days in order to shoot a documentary. Then, they disappear without a trace, and all that is found of them a year later is their dramatic film footage full of scenes of panic… As one of the most successful independent film productions of all time, ”The Blair Witch Project” was produced without expensive special effects for a paltry 200,000 US dollars and grossed a hundred times that amount at the worldwide box office.

TUES 30.1.2024, 20.00
Introduction: artist duo M+M
Tickets

A Scanner Darkly by Richard Linklater (USA, 2006, 100′, English original version )
Cast: Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr, Woody Harrelson, Winona Ryder, and others

This multi-award-winning film adaptation of a novel by cult author Philip K. Dick, based on his own experiences with drugs, was entirely post-produced using the so-called interpolated rotoscope, for which digitally shot scenes filmed with actors in real life are superimposed frame by frame with subsequent animation. This technique fits in perfectly with the drug thriller about undercover agent Fred (Keanu Reeves), which is set in the near future where the United States has become a state of surveillance, dealing with a massive drug problem which must be combated by the government and police. Due to new technology, Fred is enabled to constantly change his appearance so as not to be identified. However, he himself is a drug addict and, without realising it, his girlfriend Donna (Winona Ryder), supposedly a drug dealer but in reality also an agent, is monitoring him on his missions…

TUES 6.2.2024, 20.00
Introduction: Katrin Bauer, Pinakothek der Moderne
Tickets

Ghost in the Shell by Rupert Sanders (USA, 2017, 107′, English original version with German subtitles)
Cast: Scarlett Johansson, Takeshi Kitano, Michael Pitt, Juliette Binoche and others

Elaborately produced and star-studded, the American version of a globally successful Japanese animated film is part of Hollywood’s attempt to retell comics with real actors. However, this first attempt to translate Japanese manga into a blockbuster failed at the box office despite critical praise for the actors and the spectacular visuals: the main reason was the accusation of alleged ‘whitewashing’: Scarlett Johansson was cast as a white US-American instead of a Japanese actress.. However, the content of the manga certainly allows for a geographical shift in the setting: it tells the story of a female cyborg, a human with a machine body, who is used against terrorists working with robots controlled by artificial intelligence. This human fighting machine is called Major Killian (Scarlett Johansson), the design for her body comes from Dr. Ouelet (Juliette Binoche), a scientist who plays down her creature’s failures as unimportant ‘glitches’…

A film series in cooperation with Pinakothek der Moderne.
