Third edition of artists' film festival KINO DER KUNST in Munich from April 19-23, 2017
How do artists use the moving image to view our rapidly changing contemporary reality? How do they use fiction as a tool to describe and analyse our world? For its third edition, the Munich-based KINO DER KUNST, an entirely unique mixture of artists' film festival and museum shows, has selected circa thirty new feature films by artists from all over the world, from Egypt to South Korea, for its next competition. Works by AES+F, Shoja Azari, Sue de Beer, Clément Cogitore, Omer Fast, Johan Grimonprez, Cheng Ran, Julian Rosefeldt, or Larissa Sansour will compete for prize monies of 25,000 euros, awarded by an international jury featuring, among others, the legendary Hollywood DOP Ed Lachman and movie actress Nina Hoss.
KINO DER KUNST will offer an interdisciplinary symposium for collectors and curators to discuss the issue of digitality, virtuality and immersion as chances and challenges for media art. It will also highlight a selection of Asian films chosen by the future Hong Kong museum M+, and again hold a special pitch for emerging European artists, which is endowed with a prize of 10,000 euros for postproduction costs. Talks with international guests such as Shirin Neshat or Hans Ulrich Obrist in the Museum Brandhorst will complete the program.
Feature films by artists will be shown on the big screen throughout Munich in cinemas and museum installations. They will take place at such institutions as Pinakothek der Moderne (Pipilotti Rist's historical Himalaya Goldstein's Living Room), or – in collaboration with Sammlung Goetz – Julian Rosefeldt's multi-channel installation Manifesto starring Cate Blanchett in Museum Villa Stuck. Haus der Kunst will show films by Harun Farocki, a pioneer of the political artist film. The Kunstverein München will offer a retrospective of Belgian artists Jos de Gruyter and Harald Thys, and the Espace Louis Vuitton will present works by its forthcoming award winner of the filmic oeuvre, who will be honoured during KINO DER KUNST.
Finally, there will be a special late night screening and subsequent party featuring LA underground performer Actually Huizenga. Designed to showcase current art trends as much as be an international meeting place for artists, curators and the public, this edition of KINO DER KUNST will focus on works by contemporary artists who take fiction and narration beyond conventional limits.
